About Drexel University

Drexel University is a private coeducational university located in Philadelphia, which is the largest city in Pennsylvania, as well as the 6th most populated city in USA. During the 2008 census, its population was estimated at a number of more than 1 million inhabitants, while in the Greater Philadelphia metropolitan area, there were over 5 million people living, fact which makes it the 5th largest metropolitan area in the country.

Drexel University was founded in 1891, first starting as Drexel Institute of Art, Science and Industry, established by financier and philanthropist Anthony J. Drexel, in order to provide educational opportunities in the `practical arts and sciences`, for both women and men. The current name of the institution was adopted in 1970, when Drexel Institute of Technology gained university status.

The university consists of 9 colleges, including the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Information Science and Technology, 2 of the oldest colleges at Drexel. The most popular undergraduate majors at Drexel are: Business Administration, Mechanical Engineering, General Information Systems, Biology and Nursing, the university being known for creating the world’s first Engineering Degree in Appropriate Technology.

The athletic teams from Drexel University are known as the Drexel Dragons, having `Mario the Magnificent` as their mascot, who compete in the NCAA Division I, in the Colonial Athletic Association, as well as in the Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association, in various sports, except football, due to the fact that the university does not have one.
